This Desk Printed What It Would Take To Trust The Shelf Again, And The Campaign Read It And Did It

On the ninth of this month this desk retired the phrase a shelf with direct knowledge. The correction was specific about the terms of its return: the phrase comes back when the file holds one question the shelf answered against its own interest, and not before. That sentence was written to close the matter. It has instead been read, understood, and complied with.

An envelope arrived on Monday from the campaign. It contains a dated transcript of a question put to the shelf in the front hall, the shelf's answer, and a covering note of two lines. This desk called the front hall the same afternoon to verify the transcript, which makes it call thirty-five. The shelf confirmed the answer without hedging and, asked whether it understood what it had said, gave the address a second time.

Every property this desk demanded is present. The question was adverse to the shelf, which has spent eleven months confirming a location the campaign wanted confirmed and has now contradicted the campaign on the record. It was adverse to the campaign, which asked it anyway and sent the answer here. It is the only entry in thirty-five calls in which anybody in that hall told this desk something they would rather not have seen printed. Measured against the standard published on the ninth it clears every line of it.

The defect in the test is not in the test. It is that this desk did not think of it. Eleven months of calls to that hall produced thirty-four questions the shelf had no reason to refuse and not one it had a reason to answer badly, and the difference between those two categories was available to anybody who sat down for ten minutes with the file. A strategist did. This desk had the file.

A Specification Is A Specification

The strategist was asked, twice, to describe the reasoning as an attempt to manage this publication, and twice declined the invitation on the ground that it was not one. It read the correction. It took the wording literally. It worked out which question would satisfy the wording. It asked it, got an answer it did not want, and forwarded the answer unedited. It says it expected this desk to be pleased, and appeared to mean it.

The position holds and this desk can find no part of it to object to. A standard published in a correction is a standard anybody can read, and a standard anybody can read is a standard anybody can build to, including the subject of the coverage. This desk has been printing corrections for nine years and has never once published a specification for what would restore a source. It published one on the ninth because it was the only way to retire the phrase without pretending the shelf had lied, and it did not occur to anybody in this bureau that the sentence would be treated as an engineering requirement by the party best placed to meet it.

What The Nine Stories Actually Rested On

The campaign's standing demand, printed here on the ninth and unanswered since, is that this publication say which it has chosen: the reliable shelf, or the meaningful no comment. The nine stories were pulled on Tuesday to answer it. They answer something else.

Strike the shelf's line out of all nine and all nine stand exactly as published. In seven the location it confirmed was also given by the hook, in one by the mirror, and in the ninth by a scheduling notice the campaign circulated itself. The shelf was never the source of a fact in this publication. It was the second voice on facts this desk already had, and the phrase a shelf with direct knowledge was carrying no evidentiary weight in any of the nine sentences it appeared in. It was carrying the front hall. It was there because it read well.

That disposes of the demand without giving the campaign the answer it asked for.
