The Hat Declines A Second Interview, Citing The First One; This Desk Has No Record Of A First One

This desk asked the hat for twenty minutes on Tuesday. The request was refused the same afternoon, politely, on the record, and on the stated ground that the hat had already sat for one interview with this publication and did not intend to sit for a second.

There was no first interview. The desk went looking before it went to print, which is not this desk's usual sequence. There is no transcript, no recording, no assignment slip, no expense line, and no reporter who will admit to having conducted it. The archive holds two published stories in which the hat appears and it is silent in both.

The hook remembers the afternoon. It remembers the length of it, the order of the questions, and which of them the hat declined. It has been asked three times and has not changed a detail, which is more than can be said for several sourced humans this desk has dealt with this year. The hook has never been shown to be wrong about anything that happened in the front hall.

The shelf, which has direct knowledge of where the hat spends its nights, said it was not present. The mirror, which aides continue to describe as campaign-adjacent, said it was present and saw the whole thing from the side, which is the only angle it has.

The difficulty is that this desk cannot disprove the first interview and does not expect to.
